Chapter Six

PIPER AWOKE SOMETIME later, wondering what had disturbed her. Was it simply the strangeness of sleeping with another person? Having his hard body crowded next to hers, warming her skin? She’d had brief affairs, but had never simply fallen asleep in a man’s bed. Nope. Not being the kind to kiss and cuddle, she’d always found excuses to cut short her date.

A soft hum sounded beside her, and she smiled. Must have been his soft snores. Damn, she was glad to know the man had a flaw.

Settling again, she glanced around. Shadows filled the corners of the room, and only faint starlight filtered in through the space of the half-opened curtains. Wolf had cut the light after she fell asleep on him. She stretched and nearly groaned aloud. Although she considered herself in good shape, she was tight from the workout he’d given her. He’d performed like a man on a mission, and she wondered how much time had passed since he’d been anyone else. Glancing to the side, she spotted his handsome profile, letting her gaze linger on his strong brow and well-shaped nose. She couldn’t wait to find out whether the intensity was him twenty-four/seven, or whether he was capable of tenderness. Not that she’d be disappointed either way—but holy hell, she could use a nice long soak in a hot bath to ease the sore parts of her anatomy.

His breathing was still deep, so she scooted from his side and set her feet on the carpet. First thing, she needed to check her phone for messages. Calvin would go nuts if she didn’t check in soon. She rose, took a step, and nearly tripped on something on the floor—a bag, but with something solid at the top. Hoping she hadn’t broken whatever the item was, she knelt and felt inside the top of the unzipped bag, her hand closing around something shaped mostly like a cylinder.

With a quick glance at the bed to assure herself he still slept, she rose and walked to the window to examine the object in the moonlight. Her heart skipped a beat when she realized she held a spotter’s scope—an expensive piece of equipment. She turned it, held up the eyepiece to stare down the scope at her place, and realized he’d had a very up-close view of her teasing seduction. Even in the dark, she blushed, remembering how wanton she’d acted. A couple of adjustments to sharpen the focus, and she could see very clearly into the house that was still lit up, upstairs and downstairs.

But what was he doing with a scope if he was on vacation? Was the fact he was in this bedroom, which oversaw so much of the house where she stayed, a coincidence?

“You look like you know what you’re doing,” Wolf said from behind her.

Piper lowered the scope and swallowed before glancing back at the bed. He lay sprawled on top of the crisp white cotton sheet, a hand behind his head, his legs spread, looking impossibly sexy, but his face was in shadow.
